Apple is about to release iOS 18, the latest version of its mobile operating system. This new version is packed with new features that will potentially make your iPhone experience even better.
Before I tell you what awaits us with this new iPhone Operating System, please let me talk a bit about risk/reward with upgrading. This is a Major new upgrade and it sets the scene for some AI features later in the year. If the term AI gives you the willies, Apple is reimagining how to do it in a very private way and secure way, that right now is unique in the industry; that’s why it won’t be available immediately. I expect features will roll out with the small incremental updates throughout next year (iOS 18.3, ios 18.4, .ios 18.5). I’m being told Springish.
You can reduce your risk of frustration. Because this is a Major upgrade I always say, “Wait two weeks after availability”. That way other people can find the new bugs and inconsistencies with some of the apps such as Banking apps. Consider when you want to ‘learn’ and/or deal with the new features. Take some time. We will be teaching classes with the SaddleBrooke Computer Club on the new features in October and beyond.
Enthusiasts will likely want to jump right in; I still encourage you to wait 2 weeks, then have fun. Here is a sneak peek at just some of the new things that iOS 18 has to offer.
New home screen and Control Center customizations
Improved multitasking
New Health App
New Password Manager app
Enhanced Siri
Reminders integrated with Calendar
Mail improvements
Schedule texts
Calculator app finally on iPad
New Calculator features and integrated with Notes now
Lock Apps individually
New Accessibility features and can be put into Control Center for easy access
Major Photos App Redesign
Apple updates are free.
iOS 18 will be compatible with the iPhone 11 and later. Any iPhone that can now run iOS 17
HOWEVER, if you want the new AI features, you will need a iPhone 15 Pro or later. This is because the AI capability will require the faster chip. It needs more power to run. Maybe ask Santa this year?
Same is true for iPads; they will need the M1 chip or later. M1 iPad Air (2022), M2 iPad Air (2022), M2 iPad Air (2024) M1 iPad Pro (2021) M2 iPad Pro (2022), M4 iPD Pro (2024).
To install when availble; Go To Settings, Tap General, Tap Software Updates. Make sure you do not Select Beta Updates.
We hope to see you in October with the new iOS 18 classes.
